Queen of the Sylphs by L.J. McDonald

It was a dream come true. Solie had her own battler, a creature of almost infinite magic who could vaporize legions in the blink of an eye and would willingly suffer a thousand bloody deaths to protect her. She was his love. More simply, she was his queen.

Many others feel the same. The new-built settlement is a haven for all. Erected by sylphs of earth and fire, air and water, the Valley is Solie’s dominion. But, lovers without peer or killers without mercy, the very nature of their battler protectors means peril. It is not in any sylph’s nature to disobey, and while some are hers to command, others are the slaves of Solie’s enemies—the jealous, the cruel. Those who guard her must not fail. Their peasant-born ruler is not yet safe as…QUEEN OF THE SYLPHS (Description by Author on Amazon)

Lets Talk About It:

This series just gets better and better, however, the second book is still my favorite. This one is a close second.

We are back with Solie in her land and a lot has gone on. Solie is wanting to have a baby. Heyou is unable to give her one. The land has prospered and grown bringing people from all over in to do trades and see the land. Some end up staying and all are welcome.. although some shouldn't be. Some one is trying to kill Solie.

The only part I didn't like about this book is it was pretty easy to see who was the one controlling everything. In fact, I remember vividly, saying 'You dumba$$! Take back that command!'. And I was right. Though it was really interesting to see how it all ended up playing out. Jealousy rears it ugly head in this story.

I really recommend this series as a whole. If you haven't read it, you should! I can't wait until the next book comes out.

Kidnapped by slavers, Lizzie Petrule was dragged in chains across the Great Sea to the corrupt empire of Meridal. There beneath a floating citadel and an ocean of golden sand, lies a pleasure den for gladiators-and a prison for the maidens forced to slake their carnal thirst.

Despite impossible odds, against imponderable magic, three men have vowed Lizzie’s return: Justin, her suitor; Leon, her father; and Ril, the shape-shifting but war-weary battler. Together, this broken band can save her, but only with a word that must remain unsaid, a foe that is a friend, and a betrayal that is, at heart, an act of love.(Description by Author on Amazon)

Lets Talk About It:

This is my favorite book of this series to date!

Ril is a battle sylph that grew up around his masters family and loved his daughters, especially Lizzie. When Lizzie is kidnapped Ril, her father and Justin, the kid who thinks he loves her, take off on a search to find her.

This story is heart wrenching in so many ways. Not only the kidnapping of the beloved Lizzie but the place and conditions that she is taken to. Sold into slavery, left to fend for herself in a harem and scared witless.

The dynamic between Ril and Leon was also fascinating. Here are these two who have spent years upon years together as Master and Servant. The hate Ril feels for Leon and the love Leon feels for Ril is so powerful. It really overshadows any romance that was in this book. For me, this relationship was the one to watch.

The best part of the book for me was how pulled into that world I was. The writing really made the world, scenery, characters stand out and come to life.

He is one of many: a creature of magic, unrelentingly male. He is lured through the portal by pure female beauty, a virgin sacrifice. She is killed, and he is silenced and enslaved.

Such a dark ritual is necessary. Unlike their elemental cousins—those gentler sylphs of wind and fire—battlers find no joy in everyday labor. Their magic can destroy an army or demolish a castle, and each has but one goal: find his queen, then protect and pleasure her at any cost. What would a maiden do if she were given such a servant? What would befall that kingdom foolish enough to allow a battler to escape? Young Solie and the people of Eferem are about to find out. (Description by Author on Amazon)

Lets Talk About It:

I must admit that I had NO idea going into this book what a Sylph is. Do you? No? Well, here you go:

Sylph (also called sylphid) is a mythological creature in the Western tradition. The term originates in Paracelsus, who describes sylphs as invisible beings of the air, his elementals of air. There is no known substantial mythos associated with them. (Thank you Wiki!)

In this book, The Battle Sylph, we are introduced to this world where people have and control Sylphs. The most prestigious Sylph to own is a battler. Now, you can't just go and get a Sylph. No, there is a complete ritual that must happen and in order to gain a battler a virgin female must be sacrificed.

Solie, our female lead character in this book, has run away from home. She is heading to her aunts in the night to avoid the arranged marriage her father has sold her into. Instead she is captured and offered up as a sacrifice. Solie manages to gain control of the Battle Sylph and he, Heyou, does everything he can to protect her.

At first I could not get into this book. Just couldn't. I had to put it down and come back to it. It was a slow start even after I came back to it but before I knew it I was hooked.

The dynamic between Solie and Heyou is funny to see develop through out this book. She doesn't quite know what to do with him and he only wants to love and protect her. She's not quite sure how she feels about him other than that she is now responsible for him and that they will both need to go into hiding for more reasons than just her arrange marriage.

This isn't a love story if that's what you are thinking. No, this is the beginning of a fantastic series that introduces us to the main characters and the world in which they live in. There is action a plenty, laughs galore and amazing relationships budding before your eyes.

Guest Post: L.J. McDonald, Author of The Sylph Series

I had a friend ask me the other day what my favourite colour is and why. His favourite is blue, because that’s the colour of the sky and the sky goes on forever. I looked at my pink phone and pink laptop case and said that my favourite colour is pink, the reason being it’s such a departure from the green I wear every day. My day job is in the military and it’s been a very good life for me, but the military does say what you can wear, how you can style your hair, what colour you can have your hair and fingernails, your earrings, makeup, everything. Pink is not allowed. So pink is freedom for me. It’s personal expression. It’s feminine, and feminine isn’t an easy thing to find when you’re running around in camouflage gear and combat boots (which are very comfortable, by the way).

Thinking about colour and the reason for liking colour reminded me about the covers for the three sylph books. THE BATTLE SYLPH is a predominantly black book, THE SHATTERED SYLPH is red/gold, and QUEEN OF THE SYLPHS is blue.

Those colours weren’t just randomly chosen off a colour wheel. There was actually a lot of thought that went into them, the design team at Dorchester and by Anne Cain, the artist. Even I had a bit of input (which is very nice for an author and hardly guaranteed). The cover, after all, is the first impression that people get of a book and that makes it utterly vital. The goal is to invoke an interest in picking the book up, and also in having the cover’s emotion match the book itself. It’s pretty annoying to pick up a book and think it’s one type of book, only to discover it isn’t.

In THE BATTLE SYLPH, black was chosen to show the uncertainty of the future in it, and Solie’s fear as she’s forced into danger and the unknown. The cover is all shadows, with her being consumed by them while Heyou is the only light shining in it.

For THE SHATTERED SYLPH, the red/golds were chosen to not only show the heat of the desert sands that the book is set in, but also to show the passion and rage that Ril feels as he crosses half the world and goes into horror in order to rescue the woman he loves.

For QUEEN OF THE SYLPHS, the cover is blue. That was at my specific request (and thank you, Dorchester, for listening to me). There’s a lot of grief in the book and I wanted to show that with the sorrowful blues that shade the battlers on the cover, as well as Solie herself, who makes a reappearance in this novel. It’s also a direct nod to Claw, who is one of the most pivotal characters of the book and who has blue hair.

So, each of the colours used in the book covers was done after a lot of thought. I’m hoping that it worked for readers. In a way, more people overall were involved in the creation of the covers for the novels than were in the writing and editing of the novels themselves. The books are me. The covers are the people at the publishing company who had faith in me.
