Romance Novels Are Like Lipstick

I once read that during a recession lipstick sales rise. The theory is, even though women might not have enough money for a full makeover or a new outfit, they'll find a way to buy a new lipstick. We all know how wonderful it feels to find the perfect color that highlights your skin tone, eyes, and hair. You just feel good about yourself.

Compared to other cosmetics and options, lipstick is a fairly cheap pick-me up I suppose. Which is why I think romance novels are like lipstick. They're affordable and they offer readers something they won't find in other genres: confidence and hope. The ultimate mood booster.

Kendall, the heroine from my novel Stranded with a Cajun Werewolf, has a thing for lip gloss. For her, lip gloss is an obsession she shared with her late mother and she's kept on collecting. Kendall has a lip gloss to match every situation, every mood. Happy? She'd reach for Berry Splash. Sad? Berry Blue. No matter which shade or flavor she pulls from her purse to slather on her lips, she feels better almost instantly.

Romance novels are like lip gloss in that regard. There are so many wonderful authors and so many interesting subgenres. There's something to suit every mood. I love the romance, the passion, that alive feeling I get when I find just the right novel. I love the confidence I feel because a great story always makes me walk a little taller. A strong character can convince me that I can do anything. A well written story will remind me that I am beautiful, powerful, smart. And that I am worth it. (Whatever it is.)

Maybe one of these days tubes of Maybelline will come with a free Harlequin download and my life will be complete.

Do you have a favorite brand/shade of lipstick or lip gloss? Which authors/books give you a boost?
