Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.

Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.(Description by Author on Amazon)

Lets Talk About It:

I was really excited when I saw that Throne of Glass was on Net Galley available to read. I heard that it was going to be a lot like a YA version of Game of Thrones. Being a fan of Game of  Thrones I couldn't wait to get my hands on it.

There're things that I really enjoyed about Throne of Glass. I really enjoyed Celaena, the main character, but was also very confused by her. She's an assassin and yet during the book she didn't read as if she was a known and extremely deadly assassin. I had to keep reminding myself that she was a teen still. She's 18 and in some ways that excuses some of her behavior in other ways I felt a huge disconnect from who she was supposed to be and how she actually was. If she had such a hard life and hard upbringing as it was made to seem I don't understand how she ended up connecting with the other characters the way she did, so easily.

I also couldn't figure out what era the book was written and I don't recall it ever being stated. In some parts it read like it was old, obviously with kings and queens in the court, and yet in some instances it seems very modern.

There were also quite a few times where it felt very predictable. For instance the love triangle: very obvious and of course her fighting to become the champion: very obvious. I felt like this was more the beginning/intro  than an actual book. Not to say that I didn't enjoy reading it however it felt as if it was a very small part of a big of a bigger picture.

I'm interested in finding out what happens next with these characters and in this world and will be picking up the next in the series when it comes out.

I absolutely ADORED this book and it got me hooked onto the entire series! I think Celaena is such a strong female protagonist and she's kickass and sassy and everything I aspire to be. Though I agree that parts of the book were predictable, I enjoyed being immersed in the world of an assassin in a magic-less magic kingdom (i don't even know if that makes sense but it did when i was thinking it).

Anyways, my friend and I just started our blog and we'd love for you to check us out and let us know what you think ! we review books and makeup because we have an unhealthy obsession for both.
