Guest Post & Giveaway with Belinda Frisch

The Hospice waiting room is overflowing. Family and friends have been there for hours, some
for days. They haven’t had much to eat or drink and they don’t talk, or they speak in whispers, because they’re waiting for the inevitable. A young girl scampers around them, too young to know that her mother, only in her early 20’s, is dying in the next room of a rare form of brain cancer. Her father hands her a rose. She climbs up on the bedside footstool and sets it on her mother’s chest. “Goodbye, Mommy,” she says and there isn’t a dry eye around.

The greatest stories come from the writer’s heart and when I think of cancer, I remember
being in that waiting room over ten years ago. A girl I went to high school with died, leaving
behind her family. As a young mother, myself, the reality hit me hard. Cancer was a cruelty
I couldn’t fathom. One I never attributed to young people. It happens too often and it has influenced my writing. From my short stories The Fence and The Deal, to my novel, CURE, cancer has become a recurring theme. Part of CURE was written from the oncology unit of our regional hospital because, all of these years later, I’m touched by it again. My grandfather is terminal, Mesothelioma, and I spent hours with him while he received his chemotherapy. I watched the families come and go-- the patients all different ages, one who
was even pregnant--and I know what it feels like to be hurt and afraid, waiting for someone
you care about to take their last breath.

Knowing their pain, I did what writers do and I took control of it. At least in fiction. My novel, CURE, deals with an experimental cancer treatment derived from the virus responsible for the zombie infection. Two of my characters, Allison and her husband Zach, are at the mercy of a mad scientist whose research is the only hope for Allison’s survival. Dr. Howard Nixon uses the deadly virus as a tool to manipulate everyone around him. I use my personal experience and fifteen years in the medical field to bring the human aspect to life.

While firmly a horror tale, CURE is a graphic medical thriller and an emotional tale about
how disease touches the lives of everyone around it. CURE is the first in the Strandville
zombie series with AFTERBIRTH, its sequel, coming down the line.

Welcome to the Nixon Healing and Research Center, refuge for the indigent sick and
playground for the maniacal Dr. Howard Nixon whose cancer research has him dabbling in
the undead. His human-zombie breeding program is falling apart and only Miranda Penton
can save it.

Miranda gave up her budding military career to marry a fellow soldier but when their first
child is stillborn, it's more tragedy than their new marriage can handle. One year later and
in the midst of a painful divorce, Miranda accepts an unexpected job offer to join Nixon’s
security team and quickly becomes one of his captives.

Nixon impregnates Miranda with a zombie fetus, but her imprisonment at the center is short-lived. A rescue team led by Scott, her estranged husband, releases her and the infected on the unsuspecting hospital population.

The virus is spreading and must be contained. The center is going into lock-down. The group's escape is threatened by a homicidal security guard and a raging storm. The town of
Strandville is ground zero for the zombie apocalypse and Miranda must escape because the
fate of humanity lies with her unborn child.
