Guest Post: Ada Avery

Who the heck is Ada Avery?

I am a Minnesota author and screenwriter who writes suspenseful, paranormal thrillers and dark, historical epics. I've always been fascinated by unexplained mysteries and legends. UFOs, Bigfoot, Aliens, Ghosts, Crop Circles. When I read the story about American journalist Brian Bethel’s encounter of children with black eyes, it intrigued me. Throughout my life, I've also experienced strange phenomenon and some of my own children have had similar encounters.

As a young child. I always remember writing something--a diary, a poem, a speech, song lyrics or short stories. I have always had an uncontrollable passion for writing and expressing myself. I dabbled in music, art and got a degree in Graphic Design. I consider myself one of those super-charged ADD people, always switching gears to try something different. I knew I could never write a 500-page novel but I could write a fast-paced 90-page screenplay.

For two years I studied the craft, wrote a spec script and then sent it off to the Director of a Screenwriting Program at a local college who gave me valuable notes for improvements. It got the attention of a cinemaphotographer who had worked on the X-Files and started an independent production company in Canada. After a collaboration and rewrites, I got my foot in the door and had made some connections in the industry but nobody was calling me and I still couldn't get an agent.

That's when I suddenly noticed that Kindle ebooks were outselling paperbacks. A digital revolution. Unknown authors were getting their stories read. It was a no-brainer for me to take a script and transform it into an ebook or a paperback novella like Stephen King. It was worth a shot, I had nothing to lose. If I could sell enough ebooks, I could pay for self-publishing costs for a print-on-demand paperback and then sell the film rights to the script. That's my goal for 2012.

STAR CHILD is about Josie Sanchez who is a single mom living in a trailer in the desert town of Rachel, Nevada. A hard life on the streets with the San Chucos gang has made her a tough-as-nails waitress at the Little A’Le’Inn where she struggles to support her 7-year-old daughter Riley who has unearthly, black eyes. When Riley is kidnapped by mysterious Men in Black, Josie finds help from Colt Dixon, a troubled ex-Marine who served in Iraq. Recruited by the National Security Agency for a top-secret mission, Colt tries to save Riley after a government-alien conspiracy to replace humans with genetically-altered hybrids is revealed.
The characters in my story are culturally diverse. They speak gritty dialogue because in real life, people cuss and have relationship baggage and there isn't always a happy ending. People get sick, struggle with inner demons and make mistakes. For a busy Mom who still has a day job, writing is always a constant challenge. There are ups and downs and moments when I want to scream but I think life's challenges are exactly what a writer needs to connect to their readers. We all have mountains to climb. Believe in yourself and never give up. Remember to keep a sense of humor and try not to sweat the small stuff.
