Guest Post: Andrew Biss

To date I've written exactly 85,794 blog posts, which makes this one number 85,795. That's quite a lot, isn't it? Are you impressed? I suppose I should also mention that that's not true...not even close.

Many years ago I was acquainted with someone who felt entirely comfortable rattling off any number of exaggerated, grossly embellished, or patently false stories of his accomplishments and life experiences. I think many of us have run across someone like that at some point in our lives. I don't pretend to understand the psychology behind such behavior, least of all the delusional mind that honestly believes their audience is going to buy into their outlandish claims. But it was just such a character that inspired me to create the main protagonist, Horatio Higgins, in my new psychological thriller, Schism.

In Horatio's case, though, the origins of his behavior are a little more understandable. Being an only child and largely ignored by the other children around him, he made up his own circle of friends to whom he'd spin fantastic yarns of his exploits and adventures. However, what can appear as endearing in a child can have far different ramifications in an adult. Just what happens in Horatio's case you'll need to read the book to find out, lest I drop any spoilers, but I will say that this is not a book for the faint of heart. You have been warned.

Of the five million or so books I've written (okay, also not true), Schism has been one of the most enjoyable (there's much humor in it) yet challenging to write, for as conflicted as the main character might be, I was also faced with conflicting emotions over how I felt about him. I think the reader, too, will find that in the end drawing black and white conclusions about the tale they've just experienced isn't so easily done.

In any case, if you do decide to take the journey with Schism, I sincerely hope you'll enjoy it.

Schism: A Psychological Thriller - Overview:

As a boy, Horatio Higgins was ignored by the other children, but that didn't stop him having
lots of friends...friends only he could see and whom he'd regale with tales of his fantastical
exploits. Eventually, though, his parents became concerned at the inordinate amount of time
their son appeared to spend talking to himself and took him for treatment, which, in time, proved successful...almost. One friend remained. Unfortunately it was the spiteful one.

Years later, living alone in his tiny London flat, Horatio's loneliness is mitigated only by his acid-tongued friend and the company of what he affectionately refers to as "my wife". After losing his job, however, his life begins a rapid downward spiral...that is, until he meets a sweet, impressionable young woman named Nore. As their relationship lurches unsteadily forward, Horatio finds himself struggling against a riptide of conflicting realities he's ill-equipped to cope with. Can Nore save him from himself or will she, too, be dragged into a world where the line between fantasy and reality becomes increasingly and perilously blurred?

Weaving together dark humour with shocking, unsettling twists, Schism is sure to stay with you long after you've turned the last page.
